As some of you may know I recently !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . This morning before work I decided to crack open the fuel tank and carburetor I removed last night. The previous owner told me he bought it as a project and never got to it, so it sat in his basement for 7 years with a full tank of gas. The last time it was registered (judging from the 3 other names & dates on the title) was in 2005, so worst case scenario this thing has sat for up to 10 years.
So lets start off with the gas tank, outside it looks pretty damn good, some paint peeling, but that’s pretty normal for bike fuel tanks. Inside is where the damage usually lies, but miraculously this tank looks cleaner in there than the one in my 2006 CBR1000.
The fuel I removed (smelled HORRIBLE) didn’t have any signs of rust or particulate matter. The stupid little vacuum petcock even still functions!
So I decided to quick open up the carb and take a look inside, outside it didn’t look too bad.
I opened up the bowl to take a peek and found that (except for a little bit of crud in the bottom) it was cleaner than my old Virago’s crabs used to be during their annual cleaning.
The jets also appear to be in decent shape. I’m actually pretty confident I could plug this back in as is and get the scoot running.
So I went out to the scooter to do a bit of investigation because I remembered that there were two bottles of something in the glove compartment (plus free gloves!)
I honestly always thought this stuff was snake oil, but I honestly can’t think of any other reason for the fuel system to be in such good condition. Even the fuel lines are serviceable
So it appears that some fuel additives may actually work well, and I happened to find a scooter that was owned by someone who didn’t give a single shit about it’s exterior condition (it’s rough) but actually took very good care of it mechanically. I might realistically be able to get this thing running this weekend.

FWIW I always put sta-bil in my lawnmower can and whenever I put gas in my MG (not very often). Never had a problem starting my lawnmower or snowblower (or MG) from fuel gunkola. When I tore down the carbs on my MG last year they were spotless inside.

I know three things about your bike, one, it is a two stroke. Two it is a Honda. Three because of numbers one and two I know you could just fill that thing up, as is right now and would probably run just fine after you let it idle for about 5 minutes or so. Those are about as bulletproof as any engine can be.

I have a few other little issues to work out, but it's looking more and more like the summer project I bought will be closer to a weekend or two project.

I usually use stabil ad seafoam in my cars/bikes but I never really knew if it was doing anything., it was more to appease my own paranoia.

haha pretty much the same damn thing. I recognized the carb on it. I bought 2 of them with 3 and 5 miles on them. Couple won them in a raffle and stuck them in the basement for 20 years. Needed carb rebuilds and tank cleanings just like yours. Sold one, the other got stolen!

I did take note how terribly ironic it is that they have a steering lock, I'm 150lb soaking wet and I can lift the damn thing up. Hopefully mine is rough enough on the outside that would-be thieves will pass over it for shinier metal.

lol I drove mine around when I was 14-15 on the down low. Had a bunch of punk rock stickers on it. I parked it outside my work for 3 minutes and someone lifted it. Literally. My dad saw it a few years later in one of the larger cities and called it in. Cops didnt even show up for it
